The Vieux Carré
The Vieux Carré cocktail is a classic cocktail that has been enjoyed for generations. Its origins can be traced back to the 1930s in New Orleans, where it was created by a bartender at the historic Hotel Monteleone. The name “Vieux Carré” means “old square” in French and is a nod to the historic French Quarter of New Orleans, where the cocktail was first served.
The Vieux Carré is a blend of Cognac, rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Benedictine, and it is considered to be a classic example of the pre-Prohibition style of cocktails. The blend of these ingredients creates a smooth and balanced drink that is both strong and refined. The flavors are well-rounded, with the Cognac and rye whiskey providing a strong, smoky base, while the sweet vermouth and Benedictine add a touch of sweetness and depth.
In the years following its creation, the Vieux Carré became a popular drink in New Orleans and was enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. It was a staple at the city's many bars and clubs, and it was often served as a pre-dinner drink to help get the evening started.
Despite its popularity, the Vieux Carré fell out of favor during the latter half of the 20th century as tastes changed and new, more contemporary cocktails became popular. However, in recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in classic cocktails, and the Vieux Carré has once again become a popular drink among mixologists and cocktail enthusiasts.
Today, the Vieux Carré is widely recognized as a classic cocktail and is considered to be a cornerstone of the New Orleans cocktail scene. Whether you are a fan of traditional cocktails or you are simply looking for a smooth and flavorful drink, the Vieux Carré is definitely worth a try. So next time you find yourself in New Orleans, be sure to order one at your favorite bar or club, and experience the rich history and delicious flavor of this classic cocktail.
