Make The Best Paloma Cocktail
This week, we celebrate grapefruit with the Paloma, a famous cocktail from Mexico! Traditionally, it calls for a grapefruit soda, and our version uses fresh grapefruit juice with lime, soda water, and a hint of sugar.
The origins of the grapefruit are mysterious. We know this hybrid of a pomelo and a sweet orange appeared in Barbados in the mid-1600s due to Europeans planting citrus all over the West Indies. The fruit was most likely called a "shaddock" or the "forbidden fruit." The word "grapefruit" was not even recorded until the 1830s.
Grapefruits, like many citrus fruits, are a boost to the immune system, and they are full of vitamins A + C. When picking out your grapefruit, pick a heavier fruit that is firm and springy. The heavier the grapefruit, the juicer it will be!
